Our house in Samos
Samos is the most southerly of the North Eastern Aegean Islands and can be reached by direct flights from the UK and all major European airports. Our two-storey house is built into the mountainside of the ancient village of Ano Vathi on the northern coast.
Known for its tiny winding cobbled streets and traditional Greek way of living, Ano Vathi overlooks the more cosmopolitan Samos Town which is in easy reach should you tire of the getaway from it all atmosphere.
It is not unusual to feel as though you have slipped back in time when you see an old man leading his donkey through the village or hear birds and church bells on a still, warm afternoon. The village has a very different atmosphere from the bustling town with its vegetable market, fisherman selling their catch, designer shops, bars and tavernas.
About the house
The house which is set over two storeys has very thick stone walls which make it cool in the summer and easily heated in winter. It is one of the very few properties in the village in Ano Vathi which has a garden. This provides a private area for sunbathing or barbequing and is planted with lemon and mandarin trees which offer welcome shade from the summer sun. The views from the house and courtyard are of open sea, Samos Town below and the surrounding mountains.
Entering the house through the courtyard, the upstairs has a lounge and dining area which like the rest of the house is furnished with Samos furniture. It has an open fireplace with wood burning stove which heats the house in winter. In the summer the cross ventilation from the dual aspect shuttered windows ensures that the room doesn’t get too hot.
